First Bag of REFUGE ADVANCED™ Powered by SmartStax® Planted in Kansas

INDIANAPOLIS — April 15, 2011 — The first bag of Dow AgroSciences REFUGE ADVANCED™ powered by SmartStax® is in the field. The inaugural planting of the industry’s first single-bag refuge solution for corn took place in Silver Lake, Kan., on the farm of Mycogen Seeds customer J.D. Hanna.

“There is a lot of planning that goes into keeping track of your refuge — trying to decide which field and making sure you meet all refuge requirements,” Hanna says. “With REFUGE ADVANCED from Mycogen Seeds, the refuge is already in the bag and I don’t have to worry about any of that. I can just go to the field and plant.”

Hanna is planting 50 bags of REFUGE ADVANCED this season. In the fields where he is planting REFUGE ADVANCED, Hanna did not have to plan for a separate structured refuge, buy separate refuge hybrids or keep track of where he planted his refuge. He expects to plant his entire corn crop to REFUGE ADVANCED in future seasons.

"Each bag of Dow AgroSciences REFUGE ADVANCED™ powered by SmartStax contains a blend of 95 percent high-yielding SmartStax seeds and 5 percent high-quality non-insect-traited refuge seeds,” explains Casey Onstot, Dow AgroSciences traits marketing manager. “This is the first time that growers in the Corn Belt have been able to plant a single product across an entire field and be confident they are in compliance with refuge requirements for insect protection traits1.”

REFUGE ADVANCED received registration from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on April 8, 2011, and Dow AgroSciences offered a limited supply for 2011 planting. The company expects a full commercial launch with a broad lineup of hybrids for sale for 2012 planting. REFUGE ADVANCED will be offered only through Dow AgroSciences seed affiliates, including Brodbeck Seeds, Dairyland Seed, Mycogen Seeds, Pfister Seeds, Renze Seeds and Triumph Seed.

“REFUGE ADVANCED reduces the number of steps growers need to take to maximize whole-farm yield potential — it’s a single bag that they can just dump in the planter and go,” Onstot says.
