We at Dow AgroSciences Canada Inc. are excited about the future of canola, and are working continually on Nexera canola technology for new opportunities. But we also understand that if these varieties don't produce benefits for growers, all that technology will just stay in the bag.

Why "better" is so important
Any number of canola varieties can make more commodity canola. But that alone won't keep canola competitive. Canola oil with unique functional properties is crucial to keeping canola competitive, because other edible oils, especially soy oil and sunflower oil, are being improved with two aims; expand into canola's traditional markets and capture new value created by these new trends in the oils and fats market.
Healthy foods – North America consumers continue to pursue a strategy for approaching health through food. Perceived healthy oils such as canola and olive oil have continued to grow in market share. A specific example of this is the increased demand for Natreon canola oils. Where producers can grow Nexera canola varieties under Natreon canola oil production contracts to support this "healthy food market".
Healthy Snack Foods – North American consumers are snackers. Some traditional snack foods such as french fries, popcorn and potato chips have even come to be regarded as foods to serve at meals. Growth in this market has come primarily from healthy snacks, and one of the key requirements of these snack foods is increased shelf life. The industrial frying oils used in the production of these products must in turn have a longer shelf life.
Healthy Food Service Products – Over 40 percent of the typical family's food budget is spent on away-from-home foods. Aging Baby Boomers are driving healthier choices in these food service meals.
Natural products and ingredients – As we become more dependent on technology, the desire for fresh, natural and pure products has become stronger than ever.
Partial hydrogenation and transfats – Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils increase the stability and shelf life of oil products, but also increase trans-fats in these products. Increase in trans-fats and saturated fat have been linked with increase in cardiovascular disease. Currently, food companies are exploring alternatives to partially hydrogenated fats to reduce the percentage of trans-fats in their products.
Dow AgroSciences recognize that a new type of agriculture will be necessary to meet these consumer demands. Our first initiative in this new area of output agriculture is the product of Natreon canola oil from Nexera canola seed varieties. For more information, please go to Natreon canola oil.
