RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE

on Pears TIP #1043 12/92

M-Pede® Insecticide is an effective insecticide-miticide labeled for use on a wide variety of fruits, nuts, vegetables, field crops, ornamental and greenhouse plants. With a formulation based on potassium salts of naturally derived fatty acids, M-Pede effectively controls many soft-bodied pests, but is low in acute toxicity to non-target organisms and the environment.

MODE OF ACTION

M-Pede controls small soft-bodied pests. It acts on contact by penetrating the pest's body and disrupting cell membranes to cause rapid death of the target mite or insect.

* Always read and follow label directions of all products.

** For best results, a 1% solution of M-Pede may be applied with certain miticide products (see TIP #1037: "Tank Mixes").

STEPS FOR CONTROL

1. Monitor trees beginning early in the season and make applications as needed when the targeted life stage(s) of pests are present.

2. Use a 2% solution of M-Pede when applied alone. For enhanced control and residual activity, a 1% solution of M-Pede may be tank mixed with certain companion products (see TIP #1037: "Tank Mixes").

3. To be effective, M-Pede must contact the targeted pest. Complete coverage of the upper and

lower leaf surfaces is essential for control. For optimal control apply M-Pede spray solution to wet

(not run off) with an air blast or other appropriate sprayer.

4. Applications on fresh market sensitive varieties such as d'Anjou are not recommended after the delayed dormant stage. Make up to three applications of M-Pede for control of targeted pests prior to turn down on processing varieties. Applications after turn down may cause fruit marking.

MANAGING PESTICIDE RESISTANCE

If pesticides with different modes of action are rotated with one another in a pesticide resistance management program, resistance may be delayed or avoided. Because its mode of action is unique (disrupts cell membranes),

M-Pede can be an effective tool in resistance management programs.

USE GUIDELINES

Hard Water: Condition water prior to adding M-Pede if total water hardness exceeds 300 ppm

(17.5 grains). To determine if a hard water conditioning agent is required, perform a jar test (see TIP #1003: "Hard Water Testing"). If needed, use a conditioning agent such as Tri-Ad 73, Spray-Aide, Blendex® or Latron AG-44M (Triton AG-44M®).

Tank Mixes: When M-Pede is properly applied it provides quick knockdown of labeled pests. It does not provide residual activity. However, a 1% solution of M-Pede may be tank mixed with certain companion pesticides that offer enhanced or residual control of the targeted pests (see TIP #1037: "Tank Mixes"). Always read and follow the labels of each pesticide used in a tank mix combination and always adhere to the most stringent requirements listed among the labels. Always do a compatibility test before making large scale applications with any tank mix combination.

Mixing: M-Pede mixes readily with soft water. If hard water conditioning is necessary, add conditioners first. Vigorous agitation is not required. If excessive foaming occurs, use a de-foaming agent. Add M-Pede to the spray tank after compatibility agents and other pesticides are added (see TIP #1037: "Tank Mixes" for additional information on mixing pesticides).

Application Timing: See chart on preceding page. M-Pede works on contact; once it dries, it is no longer effective. Products that act as humectants, such as SunSpray® Ultra Fine Spray Oil, may enhance control when mixed with
M-Pede. Avoid applications when trees are stressed (such as hot/humid conditions) to reduce the potential for phytotoxicity.

RESTRICTIONS AND LIMITATIONS

To reduce the possibility of phytotoxicity, do not apply more than 100 gallons spray volume per acre.

Applications made after "turn down" may cause marking of pear fruit. Applications of M-Pede are not recommended after the delayed dormant stage on sensitive fresh market varieties, such as d'Anjou.

Do not tank mix with spreader stickers, penetrators, diatomaceous earth or fish oil.

Tank mix combinations with various foliar nutrients or pesticides containing sulfur or metallic ions (such as zinc, iron, etc.) may be physically incompatible and ultimately phytotoxic. Do not attempt their use with

M-Pede without using a tank mix compatibility agent.

Use other products for ovicidal (egg) control of insects and mites. M-Pede is active only on emerged pests.
