Scythe is a fatty acid based, non-selective, contact herbicide. Formulated as a liquid, Scythe readily mixes with water to be applied as a foliar spray for the control or suppression of annual weeds and grasses, and for top kill of perennial species.

MODE OF ACTION

Scythe kills weeds and grasses fast. When Scythe makes contact with a living plant, the spray quickly penetrates green plant tissue, and disrupts normal membrane permeability and cellular physiology. The disruption of the cell membrane results in cell leakage and death of all contacted tissue. Results are usually visible within minutes after treatment. Depending on plant size and species, some re-growth may occur and require additional treatment.

SOIL ACTIVITY

Because Scythe is rapidly degraded into the environment, treated areas can be sown (e.g. to lawn grass) or transplanted into as soon as desirable levels of weed control are obtained. Scythe may be applied for post-emergent control of weeds in areas that have been seeded, or planted with bulbs or other underground propagation parts, provided that the desirable plants have not yet emerged.

STEPS FOR SUCCESSFUL RESULTS

How to mix Scythe

• Equipment: Scythe may be applied with backpack, hand-held or large conventional application equipment which provide sufficient spray volume for thorough coverage and wetting.
• Mixing: Scythe mixes readily with water and may be tank mixed with other herbicides to broaden the spectrum of control or provide residual activity. Always determine the compatibility of other tank additives with Scythe prior to addition to the spray tank by conducting a jar test using proportional quantities of each material. Agitate thoroughly at mixing and re-agitate occasionally during use.
• Spray Tank: Fill tank 1/2 to 3/4 full with water and then add Scythe. If tank mixing, add Scythe to the tank last.

How to apply Scythe

• Scythe is a contact herbicide. Thorough coverage of all plant foliage is required. Utilize the traditional spray-to-wet technique. For spot treating and edging, a medium flow solid cone nozzle, such as a UniJet TG-3 should be used. Flat fans may be substituted for precise edging jobs. Areas of the plant not directly contacted by the herbicide may remain green and, depending on the plant species, may result in regrowth. Do not apply during windy conditions that could carry spray to desirable vegetation in nearby locations.

Timing

• For most rapid kill, apply in warm sunny weather. Avoid applications when rainfall is imminent. A rain-free period of 1 to 2 hours following application is usually sufficient for effective kill. Avoid cold temperatures. Applications when temperatures are below 70 slows the rate of kill and reduces the visual effect of the herbicide even though weeds may still die.

This recommendation is made as permitted under FIFRA section 2(ee) and has not been submitted to or approved by the EPA.
