RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE
on Apples TIP #1025 12/92
M-Pede® Insecticide is an effective insecticide-miticide labeled for use on a wide variety of fruits, nuts, vegetables, field crops, ornamental and greenhouse plants. With a formulation based on potassium salts of naturally derived fatty acids, M-Pede effectively controls many soft-bodied pests, but is low in acute toxicity to non-target organisms and the environment.
MODE OF ACTION
M-Pede effectively controls small soft-bodied pests. It acts on contact penetrating the pest's body and breaking down cell membranes to cause rapid death of the target mite or insect.

STEPS FOR CONTROL
1. Monitor trees for targeted life stage of leafhoppers, aphids and mites.
2. Use a 2% solution of M-Pede when applied alone. For increased residual activity, or if both
nymphal and adult life stages are present, a 1% solution of M-Pede may be tank mixed with
certain companion insecticides and miticides (see TIP #1037: "Tank Mixes").
3. M-Pede must contact the targeted pest to be effective. Complete coverage of the upper and
lower leaf surfaces is essential for control. Apply M-Pede spray solution to wet (not run off) with an air blast or other appropriate sprayer.
4. Make applications as necessary to control newly hatched or reinfesting pest populations.
MANAGING PESTICIDE RESISTANCE
If pesticides with different modes of action are rotated with one another in a pesticide resistance management program, resistance may be delayed or avoided. Because its mode of action is unique (disrupts cell membranes), M-Pede can be a useful tool in resistance management programs.
USE GUIDELINES
Hard Water: Condition water prior to adding M-Pede if total water hardness exceeds 300 ppm
(17.5 grains). To determine if a hard water conditioning agent is required, perform a jar test (see TIP #1003: "Hard Water Testing"). If needed, use a conditioning agent such as Tri-Ad 73,
Spray-Aide, Blendex® or Latron AG-44M (Triton AG-44M®). Do not use alkaline based conditioners such as those containing EDTA.
Tank Mixing: A 1% solution of M-Pede may be tank mixed with companion pesticides to obtain enhanced or residual control of target pests. Always read the labels of each pesticide used in a tank mix combination and always follow the most stringent requirements listed among the labels. Always do a compatibility test before making large scale applications with any tank mix combination.
Mixing: M-Pede mixes readily with soft water. If hard water conditioning is necessary, add conditioners first. Vigorous agitation is not required. If excessive foaming occurs, use a de-foaming agent. Add
M-Pede to the spray tank after compatibility agents and other pesticides are added (see TIP #1037: "Tank Mixes" for additional information on mixing pesticides).
Application: M-Pede works on contact; once it dries, it is no longer effective. For best results, spray in the early morning when temperatures are cool to promote slow drying of the spray solution. Products that act as humectants, such as SunSpray® Ultra Fine Spray Oil, may enhance control when mixed with
M-Pede. Use freshly mixed spray. Do not allow tank mixtures to stand overnight. Avoid applications when trees are stressed (such as hot/humid conditions) to reduce the potential for phytotoxicity.
RESTRICTIONS AND LIMITATIONS
Do not apply more than 400 gallons spray volume per acre on apples.
To avoid injury to fruit, do not spray to runoff on apples.
Do not tank mix with spreader-stickers, diatomaceous earth or fish oil.
Tank mix combinations with various foliar nutrients or pesticides containing sulfur or metallic ions (such as zinc, iron, etc.) may be physically incompatible and ultimately phytotoxic. Do not attempt their use with M-Pede without using a tank mix compatibility agent.
Use other products for ovicidal (egg) control. M-Pede is active only on emerged target pests.
