For Control of Cotton Aphids, Whiteflies, and Spider Mites

GENERAL INFORMATION

M-Pede® Insecticide is an environmentally compatible, effective insecticide and miticide that can be used to control a wide range of pests in cotton including cotton aphids, whiteflies. and spider mites. M-Pede's active ingredients are derived from natural sources and offer cotton producers a unique mode of action. The increase in resistance to synthetic pesticides has resulted in cotton growers looking to new and different modes of action to control these pests. M-Pede can be used stand alone in rotation, or in tank mixture to enhance the effectiveness of synthetic pesticides, even against resistant pests.

Active Ingredients Are Naturally Derived: M-Pede contains potassium salts of fatty acids which are extracted from plant and/or animal sources. Fatty acids occur naturally in many biological systems and are a common part of our daily diet. M-Pede's active ingredients biodegrade quickly following application and therefore have minimal negative impact on nontarget organisms including applicators and natural predators and parasites.

Unique Mode of Action: M-Pede is a contact insecticide and miticide which causes death to susceptible, soft bodied pests by disrupting their cuticles and cell membranes. M-Pede's mode of action is unique from most other pesticides, so it can be used to enhance their control against resistant and nonresistant pests.

Fast Knockdown: M-Pede's mode of action is quick which results in immediate knockdown, and death within a short period of time. M-Pede can be effectively used in tank mixture or rotation with other slower acting pesticides to hasten their rate of control.

Wide Spectrum of Activity: M-Pede can be used to effectively control a wide range of pests in cotton including cotton aphids, whiteflies, spider mites, thrips, plant bugs, and leafhoppers.

M-Pede is active against the adult, nymphal and pupal stages of whiteflies, the egg and motile stages of spider mites, and the adult and immature stages of aphids. The control spectrum of certain companion pesticides can be broadened when tank mixed with M-Pede.

Enhanced Effectiveness: M-Pede enhances the effectiveness of certain insecticides and miticides when tank mixed. M-Pede has been shown to enhance the effectiveness of a number of organophosphates, carbamates, synthetic pyrethroids and other pesticide chemistries to control aphids, whiteflies, and mites on cotton.

Quality Controlled: M-Pede is produced under rigid manufacturing standards and will deliver consistent results when used according to label instructions. Unlike generic dish soaps and detergents which claim to have similar modes of action, M-Pede is produced exclusively for pesticidal applications and is registered as a pesticide with the EPA.

Use Guidelines For Cotton

Rates:

    Crop              Pests                        Rate of M-Pede
Cotton whiteflies, cotton Dilute applications: Use M-Pede at 2%
             aphids,                 (v/v) stand
             leafhoppers, spider alone or at 1% (v/v) in tank mixture.
             mites
                                     Concentrate applications: use up to 2
                                     quarts of M-Pede
                                     alone or in tank mixture in 3-20 gallons
                                     of water per acre.

Interval: Apply M-Pede when insects or mites first appear, or when damage first occurs. Make two applications of M-Pede 7 days apart. Evaluate control after the second application and make a third application 7 days later if necessary. Rotate sprays to avoid making more than three consecutive sprays.

Tank Mixes: M-Pede can be used at reduced rates (1% v/v) to synergize or enhance the activity of certain insecticides and miticides in tank mixes. Field trials have demonstrated that superior control of insects and mites can be achieved by applying M-Pede in combination with certain other insecticides including: Asana®, Baythroid®, Bidrin®, Cygon®, Kelthane®, Lannate®, Larvin®, Lorsban®, Orthene®, Pyrenone® Sevin®, Thiodan®, Vendex®, and Zephyr®. Eight U.S. patents have been issued which disclose the ability of M-Pede to enhance activity of companion insecticides. Tank mix M-Pede to:

improve effectiveness over individual insecticides and miticides applied alone;

allow use of lower label rates of companion products which can result in reduced costs, reduced impact on beneficial insect populations and reduced pesticide exposure;

provide fast knockdown activity;

broaden the spectrum of pests controlled;

increase the activity against multiple life stages;

provide a unique mode of action which can be used in resistance management programs.

Mixing: Add the required amount of M-Pede to the spray water. M-Pede mixes readily with water to form a true solution, so vigorous agitation is not required. When tank mixing M-Pede with other pesticides, add pesticides in the following order: compatibility agents, wettable or soluble powders, flowable liquids, emulsifiable concentrates, followed by M-Pede. Use a defoaming agent to control excessive foaming, if necessary. For best results, use freshly mixed spray. Apply tank mixtures promptly following mixing. When tank mixing, comply with the most restrictive label instructions.

Hard Water: Water is referred to as "hard" when it contains greater than 300 ppm of metal ions (calcium, magnesium, iron, etc.). M-Pede will bind with metal ions and precipitate if mixed with hard water which can result in reduced sprayability of the spray solution due to insoluble clumps, reduced pest control effectiveness, and/or increased potential for plant injury. Compatibility agents can be used to improve performance in hard water. A simple jar test as described in Mycogen's technical bulletin "Hard Water Testing" can help determine whether a compatibility (or conditioning) agent is needed.

Application: M-Pede must come into contact with insects and mites to be effective. Adjust pressure and nozzle size to produce thorough coverage of upper and lower leaf surfaces of infested plants.

Restrictions and Limitations To Applications of M-Pede

Avoid making more than three consecutive applications of M-Pede.

Do not use M-Pede with a spreader sticker or penetrator adjuvant.

Tank mix combinations with various foliar nutrients or pesticides containing sulfur or metallic ions (such as zinc or iron) or chlorothalonil may be physically incompatible and ultimately phytotoxic.

Always read and carefully follow pesticide product labels.
