Recommendations for Use
For Control of Tobacco Budworm, Cotton Bollworm, Loopers and
Armyworms
GENERAL INFORMATION
MVP®II Bioinsecticide belongs to a new class of Bacillus
thuringiensis based insecticides utilizing Mycogen's CellCap®
Encapsulation System, possessing increased residual and higher
potency. The specially selected biotoxin in MVP II makes it the
most effective Bt product against tobacco budworm (Heliothis
virescens) and cotton bollworm (Heliocoverpa zea).
The CellCap system bioencapsulates and protects the biotoxin so
that the residual activity is several days longer than conventional
Bt products.
- Optimized Toxin: MVP II contains a specially selected
toxin of Bacillus thuringiensis variety kurstaki
(Cry1Ac) which is the most potent toxin against tobacco budworm
and cotton bollworm. MVP also controls a wide range of other lepidopteran
pests in cotton including loopers and armyworms.
- Greater Persistence: MVP II utilizes the CellCap Encapsulation
System, a patented process which improves its field performance
and shelf life. Conventional Bt's degrade rapidly on the leaf
surface due to adverse effects of heat, sunlight and other environmental
factors which renders the biotoxin ineffective against feeding
larvae. MVP II uses biological microcapsules to protect the biotoxins
from environmental degradation. CellCap products including MVP
II are more rainfast than conventional Bt insecticides. As a result
MVP II provides greater foliar persistence than traditional Bt
products which results in more consistent control of caterpillar
pests.
- Consistency: Conventional Bt insecticides perform unpredictably
due to short residual activity. The increased residual activity
of MVP II enables it to consistently outperform other Bt products
from application to application and from field to field.
STEPS FOR SUCCESSFUL RESULTS
- Use MVP II in an integrated pest management program in cotton
to control the Heliothis pest complex and to manage resistance
to synthetic pyrethroids and other synthetic insecticides.
- MVP II is most effective when eaten by newly hatched or 1st
and 2nd instar larvae. Scout for eggs and newly hatched larvae
on terminals and squares to ensure proper application timing.
- Apply MVP II as a stand alone or tank mixed with ovicidal
rates of conventional insecticides during the early season. Apply
MVP II mixed with larvicides during mid and late season.
- Treat every 5-10 days based on intensity of the infestation
and weather conditions. Scout fields 3-5 days after application
to time of subsequent applications.
- Complete coverage of the cotton plant's foliage where larvae
are feeding is essential for good control. Application volumes
should be sufficient to ensure good coverage.
USE GUIDELINES
Rates:
Tobacco Budworm and Cotton Bollworm Control
Early Season/ Apply MVP II at .75-1.5 pints per acre, tank mixed with
Pre-Bloom Stage recommended ovicidal rates of synthetic insecticides.
Apply MVP II at 1-3 pints per acre stand alone, or when
used in combination with companion products directed at
non-caterpillar pests, or with plant growth regulators.
Mid or Late Apply MVP II at .75-1.5 pints per acre tank mixed with
Season recommended larvicidal rates of carbamates,
Applications organophosphates or synthetic pyrethroids.
- Apply MVP II at 2-3 pints per acre stand alone, or 1-2 pints
per acre when tank mixed with a recommended conventional insecticide
to control loopers or armyworms in cotton.
- Rates of MVP II should be adjusted as pest pressure and crop
foliage increase.
Application:
- For aerial application using water as the carrier, apply the
recommended rate of MVP II in
- 2-5 gallons of spray per acre. Foliar coverage will increase
with higher volumes of spray.
- For ULV application, apply the recommended rate of MVP II
plus emulsified oil and companion insecticide. Mix spray components
in the following order: emulsified oil, emulsifiable concentrate
pesticides, liquid flowable pesticides, MVP II.
- For ground application, apply the recommended rate of MVP
II on a broadcast basis in 5-20 gallons of spray per acre. Adjust
the rate of MVP II and spray volumes per acre for banded applications.
- The addition of an emulsified oil to spray solutions containing
MVP II for ground and aerial applications is recommended to improve
deposition on cotton foliage.
Tank Mixing: Comply with the most restrictive label instructions
when tank mixing MVP II with other pesticides.
Always read and carefully follow all product labels.
