The release of data from Health Canada Trans Fat Monitoring Program shows that progress is being made by the restaurant industry to eliminate trans and lower saturated fat from the Canadian diet.
“The report shows that restaurants such as Boston Pizza, Swiss Chalet, Taco Bell and others have proactively changed the menu items they offer to provide customers with even healthier foods. We applaud their efforts and encourage others in the industry to keep up the momentum,” said David Dzisiak, Commercial Leader Oils at Dow AgroSciences.
Dow AgroSciences is the developer of Omega-9 Oils. Currently used by 60 percent of leading Canadian restaurant chains referenced in the report, Omega-9 Oils are zero trans fat canola oils that also have the lowest level of saturated fat among the new trans fat alternatives and uniquely contain a high level of heart-healthy (omega-9) monounsaturated fat. This means that foodservice outlets that use Omega-9 Oils are not only eliminating “bad fat” from the Canadian diet, they’re also increasing the level of “good fat.”
What does that mean for consumers? Reducing trans and saturated fat intake can have a positive effect on a person’s cholesterol level and help reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. Consumers should think about this when they are eating out as well as when they are buying groceries to cook at home.
“As restaurants look to meet the Health Canada guidelines in the coming months, they should ensure that they are eliminating bad fats, without sacrificing their great-tasting menu items or operational efficiencies. One of the easiest and most immediate things they can do is to change the oil they use in their kitchens,” added Dzisiak.
