HERCULEX I GRANTED JAPANESE APPROVAL
Mycogen Seeds Offers 10 New Corn Hybrids Containing Herculex I Trait
INDIANAPOLIS, June 25, 2002The Herculex I Insect Protection trait in corn just received final feed, food and import approval from Japanese regulators. This action allows the United States to export grain corn containing the Herculex I trait to Japan, the leading importer of American-produced corn.
"Mycogen Seeds is proud to offer 10 new corn hybrids containing Herculex I for the 2003 growing season," says Tim Kroenke, local business unit leader and general manager, Mycogen Seeds. "We are currently conducting extensive yield trials with the Herculex I trait in more than 400 locations throughout the central U.S."
With Japanese approval, grain corn containing the Herculex I trait can be channeled as follows: In the U.S. it can be fed on-farm or stored in commercial elevators for domestic use; or it can be exported to Japan.
"The ability to introduce 10 new hybrids places Mycogen Seeds at the forefront in the industry," says Stephen Smith, grain corn marketing specialist, Mycogen Seeds. "Hybrids with the Herculex I trait provide outstanding insect protection, resulting in higher yields for our customers."
Herculex I offers the broadest spectrum of in-plant insect protection currently available. Besides European corn borer (ECB) and Southwestern corn borer, growers also get additional protection against black cutworm and fall armyworm. Herculex I also offers intermediate suppression of corn earworm.
In addition, corn hybrids containing Herculex I provide tolerance to over-the-top applications of Liberty herbicide. The insect-protection feature is an outstanding investment for corn producers, reducing the need for conventional insecticide applications.
Last October, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) re-registered Herculex I for the next seven years. However, the sale of Herculex I was delayed pending the recent notification of Japanese approval. Herculex I was developed in a joint research effort by Dow AgroSciences and Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.
