No one wants to see pests in their favorite breakfast cereal. However, the potential for insect and rodent infestation pests to move from a food storage facility into your pantry is a real possibility. Pest infestations in mills, commodity storage structures and food handling facilities are a fact of life. Therefore, control of these pest infestations must be achieved in order to protect the integrity of the facilities that store and produce food products such as cereal grains and other processed products.

Fumigation is a preferred method of control because the gas fumigant penetrates wherever the pests may be hiding. The fumigant of choice for many years was methyl bromide, but because it depletes the ozone layer, its use is being phased out in developed nations by 2005 under the Montreal Protocol, an international agreement signed by representatives from more than 160 countries.

An effective solution

As millers, processors and applicators began to search for replacement treatment options, Dow AgroSciences LLC developed a solution that controls the pests that may infest cereal grains and other food storage facilities while helping to protect the environment. ProFume® gas fumigant provides a new pest control option in flour mills, warehouses, transportation vehicles and many stored grain commodities. Plus, sulfuryl fluoride, the active ingredient in ProFume, is a non-flammable, non-corrosive gas that does not deplete the ozone. In fact, the United States (U.S.) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Dow AgroSciences in 2002 with the Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award for its contributions to protect the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer through the development of ProFume.

ProFume received federal Section 3, FIFRA registration from the U.S. EPA on January 26, 2004. Research trials were performed in milling, food processing and storage facilities in Europe, Japan and the U.S.
