Oilseed Rape FAQsIn this section you will find answers to the questions asked most frequently about Dow AgroSciences’ products that are used in oilseed rape grown in the UK. Areas covered include the control of black-grass, cleavers, mayweed and thistles. There is also information about Nexera* spring oilseed rape varieties and Natreon* oil. If your question is not answered here, please Contact Us or call our Technical Hotline on 0800 689 8899. How can I maximise the control of black-grass in oilseed rape? When is the best time to apply Kerb*, Menace*, Precis* or Quaver* Flo? Now benazolin is no longer available, how can I control cleavers in oilseed rape? Can I use Galera* on spring oilseed rape? Can I use split doses of Galera in autumn and spring? Can I use Starane* 2 to control cleavers in oilseed rape? Should I control mayweed and thistles in autumn or spring? What is the latest safe timing for Dow Shield† in oilseed rape? What is the latest safe timing for Galera* in oilseed rape? Will Galera* control cranesbill? Will Galera* control shepherd’s purse? I used Kerb* on my winter oilseed rape but the crop has now failed. What can I sow in the spring? What are the LERAP categories of products used in oilseed rape? What is the rainfastness period of products used in oilseed rape? What varieties of Nexera oilseed rape are available? Will a winter variety of Nexera oilseed rape become available? Where can I find out more about growing Nexera oilseed rape on contract? How can I maximise the control of black-grass in oilseed rape?Where possible, leave stubble fallow to allow black-grass to germinate. Treat with glyphosate to eradicate any plants that appear. Apply Treflan* (trifluralin) as a pre-drilling incorporated treatment. Use Kerb* Flo, Kerb 50W, Menace* 80EDF, Precis* or Quaver* Flo (propyzamide) as a post-emergence application, once the oilseed rape has three true leaves. Propyzamide is a residual herbicide absorbed by plant roots. Application should be made to firm, moist soils with a fine tilth. Best control is achieved by treating small black-grass plants, before they begin to tiller. Where conditions are still relatively warm, or where the population is known to contain resistant black-grass plants, always apply the highest recommended dose of propyzamide. When is the best time to apply Kerb*, Menace*, Precis* or Quaver* Flo?The oilseed rape plant must have three true leaves before propyzamide is applied. Best control is achieved by treating small black-grass plants, before they begin to tiller. Where conditions are still relatively warm, or where the population is known to contain resistant black-grass plants, always apply the highest recommended dose of propyzamide. Highest levels of control are achieved from applications to moist soil and when soil temperatures are declining. Recent independent trials work, undertaken by ADAS Boxworth, has shown very good results from applying propyzamide in November and December. Now benazolin is no longer available, how can I control cleavers in oilseed rape? The only product approved for use in oilseed rape with any significant activity on cleavers is Galera* (clopyralid + picloram). Applications of 0.35l/ha can provide up to 80% suppression of cleavers present when the treatment is made. To achieve this level of suppression applications should be made in spring, when weeds and crop are actively growing, just prior to the crop canopy closing over. Can I use Galera* on spring oilseed rape? No. The approval for Galera is for applications to winter oilseed rape only. Can I use split doses of Galera in autumn and spring? No. Only one application of 0.35l/ha is permitted per crop. Can I use Starane* 2 to control cleavers in oilseed rape? No. Although Starane 2 is very efficient at controlling cleavers it is not approved for use on oilseed rape. Where accidental applications have been made to oilseed rape, unacceptable levels of plant damage have been caused. Use Galera* instead. Should I control mayweed and thistles in autumn or spring?Applications of Dow Shield† can be made as a programmed sequence to control mayweed and thistle. Only one application of Galera* can be made, in autumn or spring. For more detailed information please read the Mayweed pages and Thistles pages. What is the latest safe timing for Dow Shield† in oilseed rape?In winter and spring oilseed rape, Dow Shield must be applied before flower buds are visible from above the crop canopy. What is the latest safe timing for Galera* in oilseed rape?Galera must be applied before flower buds are visible above the crop canopy. Will Galera* control cranesbill? No. Galera has activity on mayweed, cleavers, thistles and groundsel, but will not control cranesbill. Will Galera* control shepherd’s purse? No. Galera has activity on mayweed, cleavers, thistles and groundsel, but will not control shepherd’s purse. I used Kerb* on my winter oilseed rape but the crop has now failed. What can I sow in the spring? In this situation the crops that can be re-sown in the spring, as long as 10 weeks have elapsed between application of Kerb and sowing of the subsequent crop, include field beans, broad beans, peas, chicory, radish, clover and lucerne. The most popular choice is normally to sow spring oilseed rape. What are the LERAP categories of products used in oilseed rape?

Currently, the spring-planted variety NEX 160 is available to UK growers.
One of the main objectives of Dow AgroSciences’ conventional oilseed rape breeding research is to produce a winter variety of Nexera oilseed rape.
