What should I do if I think I found Asian soybean rust?
If you think Asian soybean rust has infected a field, contact your crop adviser or university Extension agent to help rule out the disease. After inspection, if a field is still believed to have soybean rust, send a sample to the state’s university diagnostics laboratory or U.S. Department of Agriculture diagnostic laboratory. Do not wait for confirmation of soybean rust. Apply a fungicide immediately. University Extension agents can help with finding information for each state’s designated diagnostic laboratory.
For your sample collection, place the diseased leaf, stem and pod samples between paper towels, or pieces of paper, to keep them flat. Seal the paper and sample in a self-locking plastic bag and store in cool conditions. The sample should be refrigerated if possible. On the self-locking plastic bag, use a permanent marker and print the date, host plant, your name, telephone number, collection location within the field and location of the field. Information for field location should include state, county, township and nearest road intersection, with global positioning system coordinates if available.
