Management Guidelines

  • Optimum forage potential is achieved when planted in moderately to well-drained, highly productive soils. Refer to local recommendations for seeding rates for your area to achieve optimal productive stand establishment.
  • Maintain good soil fertility levels throughout the life of the alfalfa field by replacing fertility according to the tons of forage removed. Each ton of alfalfa harvested removes about 14 pounds of P2O5 and 58 pounds of K2O.
  • Soil testing and/or tissue testing can provide key nutrient analysis for potassium, phosphorus, sulfur, boron and molybdenum. If necessary, apply lime six to 12 months before planting to maintain a pH range of 6.5 to 7.0.
  • Consider rotating the alfalfa field when stands fall below four healthy crowns or 55 harvestable stems per square foot.
  • A planting rate of 16 to 18 pounds per acre is recommended to ensure full productive stands.
  • Seed pre-inoculated with Nitragin® Gold rhizobium inoculant and treated with Apron® XL fungicide.
