Beef Feeding Trial From Ridgetown College
Compliments of Nutrition Research
Comparison of TMF106 to Four Cargill Hybrids
as Silage for Backgrounding Beef Steers
This beef feeding trial was conducted by the Ridgetown
College of Agricultural Technology. Charolais crossbred steers were assigned to ten ration
treatments (five silages x two commercial protein supplements) for a period of 84 days.
Rations consisted of 93.2% corn silage plus protein supplement. The silage treatments
included one TMF and four Cargill hybrids.
In this study, silage yield per acre was 9% higher for TMF
than the second highest yielding hybrid. Also, beef gain per acre was greater for
steers fed TMF silage than steers fed the other four silages, resulting in an
advantage in gross monetary return of as much as $270 per acre when TMF silage was fed.
