Lactation Trial From an
Independent Research Organization
Compliments of Nutrition Research
Comparison of TMF108 to a Widely Grown "Dual-Purpose"
Croplan Hybrid
as Silage for Lactating Dairy Cows
In this trial conducted by an independent research
organization in the upper Midwest, Holstein cows just post-peak were assigned to two
ration treatments for a period of 21 days. Rations consisted of approximately 23% corn
silage, 22% alfalfa haylage, 6% alfalfa hay, 14% ground shelled corn, and 35% of other
ingredients such as protein supplements, fibrous byproducts, whole cottonseed, fat,
vitamins and minerals.
Authors reported that cows fed rations containing TMF
silage consumed less dry matter and produced 5 lb. more milk per day than cows fed
"dual-purpose" silage. Cows fed rations containing TMF silage also produced greater
amounts of milk fat and milk protein.
Bottom line: Feeding TMF silage could increase the
annual gross income of a 100-cow dairy opreration by $23,725 (5 lb. per day increase
in milk production x 365 days x $13/cwt milk price).
