Lactation Trial From Miner Research Institute
Compliments of Nutrition Research
Comparison of TMF94 to a "Dual-Purpose" Pioneer and a
Cargill BMR Hybrid
as Silage for Lactating Dairy Cows
This lactation trial was conducted by the Miner Research
Institute. Mid-lactation mature Holstein cows were assigned to three ration treatments.
Rations consisted of 31.1% corn silage - TMF, Pioneer, or BMR -, 20.2% high moisture corn,
17.3% alfalfa silage, 7.8% sugar beet pulp, 2.2% whole cottonseed, 12.5% protein mix, 0.6%
animal fat, 1.7% grass hay, 6.1% roasted soybeans and 0.4% sodium bicarbonate.
Lactating cows consumed similar amounts of TMF and Pioneer
silage rations, but intake of BMR silage ration was greater than the other two treatments.
This increased intake resulted in an increase in milk production of about 5 lb. per cow
per day when compared to TMF or Pioneer. Milk protein percent was greater for cows fed
TMF silage.
Even though milk yield per cow per day was greatest for
cows fed BMR silage, Income Over Feed Cost was greatest for cows fed TMF silage.
