Lightning Herbicide
and the Clearfield Production System

Compliments of Agronomy Services Department

History
Lightning herbicide was developed by American Cyanamid in 1990 to offer corn producers herbicide options to control a variety of tough grasses and weeds. In 1997 the EPA registered Lightning, and in 1999 it became one of the newest members of the Clearfield production system.

How does Lightning kill weeds?
Lightning control a broad spectrum of broadleaf and grass weed species by contact and residual soil activity through weed foliage and roots. After application, Lightning is taken up by the foliage and translocated throughout the plant.

Keys to application success

  • Apply only to Clearfield corn hybrids.

  • Make sure planter is completely empty before filling with Clearfield corn.

  • If you have heavy grass pressure, use a companion herbicide.

  • Cultivation 7 – 10 days after application will enhance residual weed control.

  • If air temperature is 50 degrees or less for 10 or more hours, delay application for 48 hours.

  • There needs to be 1 hour from application to the first rainfall for proper absorption.

  • Thoroughly clean out sprayer when complete.

Rate and timing of application
Apply Lightning at a rate of 1.28 oz. per acre.

Optimum control of weeds has been obtained with early postemergence application of Lightning to weeds that have one to four leaves (2 to 4 inches tall) and before Clearfield hybrid are 18 inches tall. Apply postemergence to Clearfield hybrids when crop and weeds are actively growing. Time the application to maximize coverage on emerging weeds.

Crop safety with Lightning herbicide:

  • Rotational crop intervals for soybeans are 9.5 months.

  • No triazines, which reduces triazine load on environment.

  • Excellent crop safety with Clearfield hybrids with no concern about crop injury.

  • No soil insecticide/herbicide interactions, allowing greater flexibility.

  • Mycogen Seeds offers many high yielding Clearfield hybrid choices to maximize yields with optimum weed control.
